To give a serious answer: the standards for tap water leaving treatment plants in China are on par with those of the European Union. However, the government is concerned about potential secondary contamination, as underground piping networks in some older urban areas—which date back decades—have not yet been fully renovated. In reality, there are no issues in newer urban areas, and the situation regarding this problem in China is no worse than in Western countries. The government's recommendation to boil tap water before drinking is simply a measure taken out of a sense of responsibility toward the public.

Drinkable tap water just means you are fine drinking a lot of chlorine... it's supposedly at safe levels, but why do that when you can simply boil it away?

In my city (in the US) the tap water is "drinkable" (in the sense it won't kill you if you drink it) but the pipes are so old & rusted it's basically undrinkable without an additional filter. In some areas of the city the water is so rusty they have to use a special kind of laundry detergent to keep from ruining their laundry.

china tap water standard is higher than most of the countries in the world. the Chinese government warn people not to drink is simply they worry about citizen health. our tap water standard is higher than your country drinkable tap water. no matter where are you from

if depend where. if you're in Shanghai, the water has a really strong smell and taste. you'll smell and taste it in the food as they use tap water to cook. but if you travel a couple hours to Hangzhou, suddenly the smell and taste is gone.
