I think people hate Gwen in the second movie because she isn’t like the other Gwen Stacys in the movies/comics. But people forget that because she isn’t like the other Gwen Stacy’s, and she is spider-woman, she has the same responsibilities as Miles does. What they wanted to see is a love interest who was helpless and getting saved, which would make Gwen fall in love with him. People hate that they are equals, and that Gwen is complex. She has her own internal struggles and grief. I haven’t watched many of the movies but even if we look at the patterns of other movies, there is always a love interest of a hero who either dies tragically or needs to be saved; they lack complexity because they are the pretty face in need of rescuing. Movie romance always centers the man even when the main character is a woman, whether it be the woman running into a random man and falling in love or the man trying to win her back (and succeeding). Gwen, similar to female characters of Arcane, are the interpretation of the argument that women and men’s feelings don’t rely on the fact that they are a woman/man. The women in both stories make mistakes, and everyone hates when women make mistakes, even other women.
