Yes, including most people in this comment section and possibly even you. Socialism (in the Marxian sense, by far the most dominant and relevant version) and communism can effectively be used interchangeably: communism is the superstructure that naturally develops on top of the economic base of socialism. They exist simultaneously, and "communism" is not a separate economic system--socialism is the economic system. Marx distinguishes higher stage communism (what we typically think of when we say communism, the final end-state when the state is withering away and so on) and lower-stage communism, the political & social systems during the transition period after economic socialism is established (think of historical socialist states). So yes, all socialists (who are using the word correctly and don't just mean a mixed-economy welfare state) are also communists. This includes "democratic socialists" btw, who simply want to evolve toward full socialism through democratic means (again, I'm referring to people using the term correctly and not just using it to mean "social democrat").

I think that it is safe to say that not all, but a significant portion of the American population, even the educated, are still affected and conditioned to fear and object to all things labeled “the communist boogeyman” through decades of relentless generational rhetoric and propaganda. Scared enough to never doubt it, they therefore do not seek out available information. Some who do simply reject or dismiss the information as not true when it contradicts what they have been told. When everything else is scary, people fear changes and react to any other possibilities and scenarios with hostility and aggression instead of allowing the conversation. They’re not talking, but only reacting and resisting

Communism = ideal equality, no government, no money. Completely unrealistic in the short term, but a totally valid goal for people to work toward. Socialism = workers in full control of the economy, no “owner” class, no extreme wealth inequality, highly functional democracy, government operates some industries due to profit motive being in direct conflict to public interest. Where government controls an industry, that effectively becomes a “planned” economy at least for that industry, but other industries can be regulated markets. Authoritarianism is NOT leftist, that’s a lie created by Lenin as a way for him to acquire and hoard power. Leftism is fundamentally based in the distribution of power, which is a core part of equality. Violent revolution leads to authoritarianism, which eventually degrades to capitalism. It’s not a valid path to a Leftist society.

Communism and capitalism are 2 sides of the same coin and only ideologies. They are ideas that can’t exist in reality in their pure form. What is existing in reality is institutions. Institutions that justify their implementation by using these ideologies. But you can totally justify the same policy using both communism and capitalism. Take healthcare. In most developed countries you have universal healthcare which is "communism" in spirit or so they say. But it’s implemented in reality using a capitalistic business monopoly that just happens that the state own the insurance company and its illegal for anybody else to enter the business… or on the contrary in countries like the Netherland, it’s a private insurance model like the US, but the laws are so strict and regulated like they are obligated to provide basic care at cost for every citizen that it functionnaly act like a universal system most of the time. So look at the policies and institutions to see if they are for the people or against the people. Simple as that. ✌️
