According to known history they were trying to eradicate heresy. The problem is that these gnostic principles weren't organized or a unified threat by themselves. Gnosis is a long standing concept but gnosticism is a modern label that didn't exist. Only their attempted unification and coalition of these texts could threaten the empires validity. When Marcion of Sinope began compiling and editing counter texts the church went into combat mode. They ordered destruction but the monasteries hid the texts...according to accounts anyway. Maybe you know differently.
