Well, this was a first for me! I’ve had meat spots (they look like tiny pieces of ground hamburger in the egg) and I’ve heard of blood spots, but haven’t seen one until today. No, it’s not a fertilized egg. Blood spots happen when a blood vessel in the hen’s ovary or oviduct ruptures during egg formation. If it’s on the yolk, like this one, the rupture probably happened in the hen’s ovary. If it’s in the egg white, it probably happened in the oviduct. Generally, both meat spots and blood spots are safe to eat. I’ve had chickens for nine years, and this is the first time I’ve had such a bloody surprise. Blood spots occur in about 2-4% of eggs. In store-bought eggs, these are often detected and removed, but when you’re getting eggs from backyard, you’re more likely to see nature’s imperfections. Sooo…do you think I ate it?? 🐓🥚💛 #backyardchickens #fresheggs #eggs #cooking #cracked #eww #breakfast
