In July 2011, Peter, his brother Aaron and their little sister Willa were returning home with their beloved parents, Josh and Robin Berry, when a distracted driver changed their lives forever. Josh and Robin lost their lives, Peter and Aaron sustained spinal cord injuries, and Willa survived. The love, faith and values Josh and Robin placed in the hearts of their children became the foundation that carried Peter, Aaron and Willa forward. With extraordinary love, their aunt Simone and uncle Matt welcomed the three children into their home and raised them as their own. May God bless them abundantly for surrounding Peter, Aaron and Willa with love, guidance and hope. During rehabilitation at Shriners Children’s Chicago, Peter and Aaron discovered wheelchair basketball. What began as part of their recovery became a passion and a purpose. With the encouragement of their family, coaches and teammates, they earned scholarships to the University of Alabama Adapted Athletics Program, became national champions, and Peter proudly went on to represent Team USA. Peter once said, “I don’t see my story as a tragedy. I see it as the foundation.” Those words reflect the remarkable young man he has become. His courage, humility, faith and gratitude continue to inspire people around the world. The love and values of Josh and Robin continue to shine through Peter, Aaron and Willa. Their legacy lives on through the kindness of their children, the unwavering love of Simone and Matt, and everyone at Shriners Children’s Chicago, together with the coaches, teachers, teammates and friends who believed in them.
