A memory chip company in South Korea just out-earned Samsung for the first time in history. The reason is a chip most people have never heard of. HBM. High bandwidth memory. It sits directly on top of every AI accelerator and feeds it data fast enough to actually run large models. Without it, the GPU is useless. Building HBM is nothing like building regular memory. It requires stacking up to 12 layers of DRAM dies vertically and connecting them through microscopic holes drilled through the silicon itself. Called through-silicon vias. Yields sit around 50 to 60 percent, meaning nearly half of every chip produced gets discarded. Every chip that passes consumes the manufacturing capacity of three or four standard memory chips. Three companies can do this at scale. SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron. SK Hynix holds 62 percent of the market as of Q2 2025 according to Counterpoint Research. They are already sold out through 2026. The entire AI industry is on their waitlist.
