First thing these kids do is get rid of the cows when they join the operation. It’s “ too much work”. Gets in the way of lake days and winter vacations. Thank god my boys love cattle.

AJ your dead on 💯. Here’s my take from South Texas. To start with the cow heard nation wide just got readjusted my buddy at NRCS said it’s been the lowest since 1951 and just got bumped back to 1948 . On another note as far as farmers owning cattle. We have a grow yard and sale our feeders to on the farm feeders in the Midwest the trucks travel 900 to 1100 miles away. If we didn’t have those farmers buying our cattle the corporate yards would steel them from us.

Mixed operations are well diversified. The high grain prices and low cattle prices from 2005-2020 created a lot of straight grain farmers. Cattle are a lot of work and if you don’t love cattle people got rid of them.

Most farms used to have cows(beef&dairy), pigs, chickens in our area. Agriculture as a whole has specialized.
