@elite.recruiter: A narcissistic boss doesn't go after the weakest person on the team. They go after the strongest one, and it confuses people every time, because logically you'd think competence would protect you. With a narcissist, it does the opposite. Here's why: 1️⃣ You don't run on their approval, and that takes away their main lever. Narcissists steer people by handing out validation and yanking it away. A person secure enough not to chase their praise can't be controlled that way, so you stop being someone they lead and become someone they have to manage. 2️⃣ You can see through them, and they know it. A narcissist survives on image, and a sharp, perceptive person is the one most likely to notice the gap between the performance and the reality. They'll move on you before you ever say out loud what you can already see. 3️⃣ Your competence is a mirror they can't stand. It isn't that you're after their job, it's that being around someone genuinely good at the work forces them to feel their own gaps. So they set about making you look less capable than you actually are, just to make that feeling go away. 4️⃣ You come with your own base of power. Strong people arrive with allies, a reputation, and options, and that independence is the one thing a narcissist can't tolerate, because they need you isolated and a little dependent to keep control. So they go to work separating you from the people who'd have your back. If a narcissistic boss has locked onto you, take it as information, not a verdict. It usually means you're the one they couldn't control, couldn't fool, and couldn't outshine. Protect yourself accordingly. Stop trying to earn their approval, keep your own record of everything, build relationships they can't touch, and don't let them cut you off from your people. The ones who come through this intact understood early that being targeted was a sign of their strength, not proof of a flaw. #corporatelife #careeradvice #narcissisticboss #officepolitics #careergrowth

In my experience they have gone after my “interpersonal” skills. While telling me my experience exceeds expectations. I figure out standards that are not theirs or are higher than theirs tend to be a problem.

All good points, and she still fired me. Like, actual fired 😂, I did everything I could and realized I was truly at her mercy so I quietly packed my things, gave instruction to my leads and happily collected my paycheck for as long as it took her to get the nerve to do it, then smiled at her and went for a margarita.

Difficult to navigate when you have no intention of leaving (most days) I love my job and know I have a positive impact as I work with young people. So 1) it’s bigger than me/not just about me 2) I’m very stubborn 😂

What if the boss is competent but you are as well. If they’ve isolated you from the team and you can’t afford to leave in this tight job market? How do you deal with it

Dealing with one now, couldn’t care what he thinks, feels or does.. he can kick me out all he wants.. he doesn’t realise his actions will have consequences… esp when everything is recorded. Good luck to him, he’s gonna need it all the way
