i regularly think abt how he, his team and a few other ppl just completely fumbled onision essentially being dropped in their lap, evidence and all and bc of their fuck ups the dudes still walking free, i think that really encapsulates how even the best meaning ppl can cause harm instead of helping

I listened to Chris Hansen’s podcast the other day and he said that he has seen the movie and is excited for his release. He has no idea at all that it’s not praising him 😭

We def need to recognize how there are many ppl in the “advocacy” arena who don’t care abt victims half as much as they care abt their own egos and paydays etc etc So I can appreciate a film that gets into that

I hope it’s more nuanced than just Chris Hansen is bad. In a way, it almost does take a predator to catch a predator. Of course he didn’t stop the crime or solve the crime but frankly that’s not what he promised. The show was about teaching the public that anyone can be a predator. These images we had of a stranger cruising a park were no longer accurate in representing who was committing these crimes. Like he’s no super hero but I can appreciate that he was willing to play incredibly dirty to catch these guys and I can’t deny how satisfying it was to watch him essentially hunt these people. I always felt bad for the decoys though

I like your dissertation on this. For your opening question? No. America is not ready. Many people see in black and white and refuse to think any deeper than "bad guy dies, bad guy catcher always 100% good".

Sort of like Dr. Drew with celebrity rehab. I think it introduced a wide scale audience to what addiction and withdrawal looks like in real time and, in turn, created more empathy but it also meant exploiting those patients and advertising their trauma

leaning into NIGHTCRAWLER for this was a very inspired choice. I absolutely didn't expect the direction they went with at all. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the movie is used to talk about pedohunter kick streams and how those are explicitly downstream from Chris hansen and how they do way more harm than good

I see a lot of people saying something along the lines of they don’t care if he was egotistic or operating in bad faith as long as he was catching them or teaching people but the thing is that he wasn’t. It was fear mongering and didn’t actually give people tools to counter predators. They caught predators who were aware of the show and still turned up

I feel like the motivation behind this movie is to get people to distrust pred catchers. There’s been a lot of them popping up in the past several years so I can see how that would push hollyweird to put this out

My neighbor was one of the chatroom dudes caught by the original run of To Catch a predator. His wife left and took the kids with her within six months. She saved them from being in a house with a predator; not sure I will ever fully think badly of Chris Hansen for what he did.

The film seems to ask “who’s the real predator?” in an attempt to be edgy but actually its just 100% the predators who are predators 🤷♀️

people need to understand that while not all of these predators were given proper sentences, you CANNOT undervalue the importance of having something like this that was broadcasted on television. Even just the fear alone of being caught and shamed on a TV show would probably scare away some of these predators and it’s better than doing nothing at all like we are right now. Say what you want about modern content creators doing the same, but it’s the vigilante approach when nobody else is doing the dirty work ✌

The comments seem to be proving your thesis correct. Average people are not ready for a movie that is critical of someone who made his living off catching predators. But IMO, that's all the more reason to make something like this.

As long as the movie is critical of him then it’s a worth while movie. I’ve been off put by the hero worship he receives since he put himself in the center of the Onision situation. He fumbled the bag so bad there
