Resist.” — FCT CP Ahmed Sanusi Tells Abuja Residents The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Sanusi, has made it clear that police officers have no right to stop people on the road and demand to search their phones. According to him, the Inspector-General of Police has already issued a firm directive prohibiting random phone searches due to the widespread abuse and extortion allegedly carried out by some officers and other security personnel. Sanusi explained that a person’s phone can only be examined after they have been lawfully arrested and taken to a police station as part of a legitimate investigation—not simply because an officer suspects them of internet fraud or any other offence while they are walking or driving. In his words: “Don’t agree. Don’t open your phones. Resist.” He added that if any officer attempts to conduct an unlawful phone search, members of the public should call the police emergency line or seek help from people nearby to alert the appropriate authorities. He assured residents that the command would take appropriate action against offending officers. The directive is being welcomed by many as a significant step toward protecting citizens’ rights and curbing the roadside extortion often associated with illegal phone searches.
