NRSV is most scholarly accurate. It’s worth mentioning that proper understanding of the Bible comes from understanding the *message*, not from memorizing specific wording.

I’m saddened nobody is using KJV. If you’re looking for a main bible, then KJV. Try to get parallel versions with NIV.

There were English Bibles before the King James Version, but what set the KJV apart was the translation process. King James I commissioned about 47 of the best Hebrew and Greek scholars of the time, who were divided into six independent translation companies at Westminster, Oxford, and Cambridge. Each company translated its assigned portion separately, then the other companies reviewed that work. Afterward, a final committee examined the entire Bible to resolve disagreements and ensure consistency across all 66 books. The translators primarily worked from the Hebrew Masoretic Text for the Old Testament and the Greek Textus Receptus for the New Testament, while also comparing earlier English translations. The result was a Bible that underwent multiple independent reviews and cross-checks before being published in 1611. Whether someone believes the KJV is the best English translation is a matter of conviction, but historically, it was one of the most thoroughly reviewed and collaborative translation projects of its time.
