Sipho Johnson Mdletshe aka Jambo is the artist of the day (06/08/2026). Sipho Johnson was one of South Africa's finest reggae voices and a true pioneer of the country's reggae movement. Born on 7 August 1966 in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, he built a career on music that inspired hope, unity and social change. His rich vocals, thoughtful songwriting and unmistakable African reggae style earned him a place among the most influential reggae artists to emerge from South Africa. Jambo first came to prominence as a member of the group Izindlovu before forming Jambo with Elphus Mkhize and Mandla Nongena.The trio signed with Cool Spot Productions, where they developed a unique sound that blended authentic roots reggae with Zulu musical traditions, township rhythms and uplifting gospel harmonies. At a time when South Africa was undergoing profound political and social change, Jambo's music became a powerful voice for peace, faith, education and unity. The group's breakthrough came with the release of Prodigal Son in 1988. The album was a tremendous success, reportedly selling more than 100,000 copies and achieving double-platinum status in South Africa. It firmly established Jambo as one of the country's leading reggae acts. They followed that success with a string of acclaimed albums including Bad Friend (1990), Calling All Children (1991), Give Us Power (1992) and No One (1996), the latter earning a nomination for a South African Music Award for Best Reggae Performance. Among Jambo's most memorable recordings are Calling All Children, Bad Friend, No Man Kill Another Man, Jahovia, Don't Cry and Shine On Brighter. His songs carried messages that went far beyond entertainment, encouraging young people to value education, promoting peace during times of violence, and reminding listeners of the importance of love, justice and faith. His lyrics reflected everyday life while remaining deeply rooted in the positive spirit of reggae music. In 2000, Sipho Johnson embarked on a solo career with the release of Unborn Child, produced by Richard Siluma, who was also known for his work with Lucky Dube. The album showcased his maturity as a singer and songwriter while preserving the conscious reggae message that had defined his career. Sadly, Sipho Johnson passed away on 19 March 2014 at the age of 48 after complications related to tuberculosis. Though his life was cut short, his music continues to resonate with reggae lovers across South Africa and beyond. Today, Jambo is remembered as one of the pioneers of South African reggae—a gifted singer, songwriter and composer whose music promoted peace, unity and hope.
