this would maybe work for a small subset of what taxes are spent on, but a huge part of it are things that people who don't need it wouldn't give money to, unless they need it, which would kind of break down the system. If no one who's working spends their taxes on pensions or unemployment, there would be no safety net for when they do retire or get unemployed.

I would love to see that concept utilized. Even if only 10% . I would love to see exactly where my money is being best used. I would head directly to things that help the planet!

Only if that percentage is extra, maybe someone could create a system where you can decide to be taxed for an extra amount guaranteed to go to any gov agency of your liking, at either federal or state level, to accomplish a tangible goal in X timeframe (gofundme.gov lol). Doing what you describe would be too difficult for the average joe, inefficient (bc nobody cares about energy, forestry, treasury, etc. it would be set at minimums, and all to health care, police/military, education), and possibly reduce budgets on the whims of “the people”, and nobody in gov likes that. But then again, one could argue most local "problems" can be fixed by donating money / equipment to nonprofits, local gov, hospitals, etc. No need to change the whole tax system >.>
