@litemindedtherapy: To clarify, these are practices, not quick fixes. They may feel unnatural or even increase your anxiety at first, because you’re doing something different from what has historically helped you feel safe. Instead of monitoring someone’s attention, searching for reassurance, or withdrawing to see whether they notice, you’re learning to pause, tolerate uncertainty, and respond more intentionally. The goal isn’t to ignore your instincts, excuse harmful behavior, or train yourself to tolerate relationships that are consistently unsafe, manipulative, neglectful, or one-sided. Sometimes anxiety is activation from an old wound, and sometimes it is giving you important information about the dynamic you’re in. The work is learning to tell the difference. Over time, you’re practicing staying with the initial discomfort long enough to ask: “Is this an old fear being triggered, or is this person repeatedly showing me that they cannot offer the consistency and care I need?” Therapy can be especially helpful in sorting this other and doing the deeper work in an ongoing, supportive capacity. If you have specific questions, drop them in the comments and happy to answer 👇🏻🫶 #anxiousattachment #therapytok #hypervigilance #codependency #relationaltrauma

What if you’re the one always initiating though? Also, asking for reassurance is also discouraged.

how do you then separate out the fear about “seeming needy or annoying” from reaching out to check in? i think i have delayed getting reassurance from people because i don’t want to come off as anxiously attached to etc.

It feels really good to know that I have been doing these things already. It’s hard to regulate yourself but it’s very possible and I’m hoping that one day it becomes totally inherent and doesn’t require any regulation. The other thing I found that’s helped me is reminding myself that I don’t give my loved ones attention all the time either but it doesn’t lessen my love for them or their importance to me. Helps reframe the panic immediately. Happy to say that it gets better very quickly, this time last year I was still so anxious and struggling but now it’s only a passing thought in my head sometimes that I can silence quite easily

I'm starting to learn that how I behave in a friendship isn't always how my friends behave in a friendship. And that it's totally fine. There's always going to be initiators and joiners, and in most of my friendships, I'm the initiator. And if I get the feeling like I'm imposing or being too much... that is just my anxiety talking. If they had an issue with me being too much, they would either tell me, or they wouldn't respond, full stop. The fact that they do... must mean that they like communicating with me, too. And nobody can carry on talking to someone daily out of politeness for months, unless they really care about one another as friends. It's... an uphill battle, knowing all of this and trying to get my brain reprogrammed. But the first steps are there! 💖

But what if i did reach out and did ask for reassurance and i just didn’t get it? What if the other person claims “no problems” but it feels different?

How does one feel, good about yourself, when there's nothing but emptiness at the centre? The statement assumes presuppositions of some-thing which feels?

Thank you for this! sometimes this is so hard that I notice myself doing the complete opposite, as a way of avoiding the disregulation of depending on someone's attention I started to avoid people and get really lonely. it's good to be reminded that there are other paths.
