You may have seen some videos or articles recently saying “Electrolytes are a SCAM” (or something similar). I’ve even had a few people send me messages asking what I think. So, this is what I think. If you’re sat at a desk all day, eating a balanced diet, training for 45 minutes in the UK and not sweating much, you don’t need expensive electrolyte supplements. Your body is pretty good at regulating itself, and the fitness industry has a habit of convincing people they need products that they don’t. Over the years I’ve been known to call this out. But CONTEXT MATTERS. I’ve spent the last 10 months in parts of the world that don’t feature in the literature referenced in these “electrolytes are a scam” videos. This morning I finished a run more than 3kg LIGHTER than when I started (let that sink in). The heat and humidity here (in Brunei atm) are like nothing I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. It’s simply a different ball game. For ultra athletes, heavy sweaters 🙋🏻‍♂️, people training in crazy heat, or anyone losing significant amounts of fluid for hours at a time, electrolytes are NOT a scam. Replacing sodium and other minerals lost when you sweat is essential for hydration, performance, recovery, and even focus. The problem is assuming advice meant for one group applies to everyone. So of course, don’t buy things you don’t need. Be cynical of highly priced products marketed to EVERYONE. But remember that the headlines aren’t the full story. Just because someone is “calling BS” on something and seems smart, doesn’t mean you have to question everything. Discernment. That’s what’s needed. As you can see in this video, I’d do well to have a nice convenient electrolyte mix in my pack whilst I’m out on the trails.
