❗️❗️❗️Varnishes are divided into two types: regular protective varnishes (satin, acrylic) to protect the paint layer of the painting from environmental effects, and interlayer varnishes (retouching, damar) which are used for interlayer treatment (for good adhesion of the layers). It is recommended to cover the painting with regular varnish after the paint layer is completely dry, which takes about 8 to 12 months after the painting is finished. In the case of interlayer varnishes, old masters used retouching varnish if they needed to continue working on the painting after a long break (from 3 weeks or more) to dissolve the oil film and ensure adhesion of the next layer to the previous one to prevent peeling. Damar varnish was used in a 1:1:1 ratio (linseed oil, turpentine, damar varnish) for glazing layers (the closest example is how we use liquin). Damar varnish is a "breathable" varnish, so if you need to cover the painting earlier than the recommended time, you can use it. I hope this information was useful to you.
