As a couple we spend about £400 a month on groceries so this tracks to be honest. And we even treat ourselves to extras. I do think sometimes it’s what you buy not just where you buy. Everyone’s basket is different

£200 sounds about right. if you spend too much less than that then your meals are gonna be bland and samey, if you spend more then youre rich and im jealous.

The protein is what makes my groceries expensive . Most of my carbs come from sweet potatoes

It’s 2026, not 2018. Everything is ridiculously expensive. £50 a week is pretty normal.

I honestly think a lot of people who think it's a lot spend more than they think (closer to 200 or even over), they're just not tracking it accurately. Like, maybe their big weekly food shop is 25, so they think they only spend 100/month but they spend 10-15 throughout the week on snacks and treats as well. Or they eat out a lot and don't count it as grocery budget, or frequently eat at other people's homes (eg their parents) for free. Or they're just (subconsciously) virtue signaling because for some reason we've made spending little money so much a question of character and even intelligence.

50 a week sounds perfect to me I don’t get the issue? Definitely some treats in there but quality food can be a bit expensive 🤷‍♀️

Oh average I spend about £40-50 pw on food but my nearest big shops are both Sainsbury’s. Would be different if I lived by Lidl/aldi etc

I live alone and probably spend around £40/£50 a week, I could do it more frugally if I had to but I love a snack and a trip to M&S 😂

Yeah £50 a week ish seems super reasonable for one person, surely? Could be lower if you were dedicated to budgeting as low as possible, but it could also be higher pretty easily too

Most prople don’t account for items like oil, kitchen items that aren’t strictly food. People under report how they spend on groceries. £200 a month is completely fine!

I spend double that… I really don’t see how i can spend less. I east carbs, protein and vegs at every meal, and I shop at waitrose. Are people who spend less just eating less proteins (which usually cost the most) or shop at other stores?
