Turn it over: four screws, one almost always hiding under a sticker or a rubber foot. Under the left and right buttons are two switches about the size of a grain of rice, built to be pressed millions of times, and the exact same component is sold in a hobby shop as a limit switch — the part a robot uses to know it has reached the end of a rail. The scroll wheel is better still. It sits on a rotary encoder, a knob that counts steps instead of turning smoothly, and it is what you want whenever a build asks a person to choose a number. A potentiometer has a start and an end. An encoder turns forever, and the board just counts. The printer is the best haul in the house and nobody wants theirs. The print head does not float across the page: it rides on a ground steel rod, dragged by a toothed belt, and the belt is turned by a stepper motor. A stepper is not a normal motor. It does not just spin when you feed it power, it moves in fixed steps, so a board can tell it to go a precise distance and it goes exactly that far. That is the difference between a wheel and a machine that draws. There is usually a second stepper for the paper, and a small switch at one end of the rail so the head knows where the edge is. The headphones answer something you may have wondered about. Every beginner project makes noise with a buzzer, and a buzzer really only does one tone. A speaker is a different thing: a coil of thin wire hanging inside a magnet, glued to a paper cone. Push current one way and the coil moves out, the other way and it moves in, and the cone pushes air. Feed it a signal and it plays anything. Both earcups have one. And the part that matters: on a dead pair the failure is almost always the cable where it bends near the jack, almost never the drivers. The bit that broke is the bit you were throwing away. The remote is the most common thing in a drawer, and it holds two parts. The dark window at the front is not plastic to look through, it is an infrared LED — the sending half of a link, whose matching receiver is what you buy when you want a build to notice a hand pass in front of it. Underneath the buttons is the second one, and it is a piece of engineering everyone touches and nobody looks at: a rubber sheet with a black conductive pad under each key, over a board printed with two interlaced contacts that touch nothing. Press the key and the pad bridges them. A whole keypad with no switches in it. Now the honest half. Leave mains wiring alone, and leave anything soldered flat with legs a millimetre apart: freeing those needs a hot iron and a lot of patience, which is a different hobby than the one you are starting. The other thing to leave is the cable. Rescued cable is stranded, dozens of hair-thin strands twisted together, and it frays instead of pushing into a breadboard hole and staying there. Jumper wire is a single stiff strand for exactly that reason.
