“And how are you supposed to tell they're not pretending to be cops to rob this guy or something?” A man riding an e-bike in Manchester thought he was about to be robbed after a group of men in tracksuits, and crossbody bags, stopped him while he was riding along a canal. The men were police officers. In a video posted on Instagram on Monday, user Kurrgas, is seen being forcibly stopped by the group who say, “stop, police, police”. Kurrgas isn’t convinced and asks to see ID, which the officers provide, along with an explanation that they are targeting drug dealing and knifepoint crime by e-bike users. “I thought you were going to rob me,” he explains. “F***** s*** me up mate, but fair enough, lads, I understand.” One of the officers apologises: “Sorry to scare you like that.” Greater Manchester Police explained that the stop was part of Op Eagleye which runs nationwide. In February, the force noted they had seized 15 e-bikes and made several arrests after officers were deployed in Gorton, Harpurhey and on the Fallowfield Loop to “tackle the antisocial behaviour issues” stemming from the use of illegal e-bikes.
