To my friends in Zambia and Malawi, Yesterday’s WAFCON match has left me genuinely scratching my head. Going into the final round of Group C, it appeared that if Nigeria beat Egypt, then the qualification battle would effectively become a three-team mini-league between Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi, with Egypt’s results no longer counting in the head-to-head tiebreakers. That created a fascinating, and rather extraordinary, situation. Had Zambia beaten Malawi 4-3 instead of 2-1, both Zambia and Malawi would have progressed to the quarter-finals, while the ten-time African champions, Nigeria, would have been eliminated on the head-to-head tiebreakers. Think about that for a moment. Two neighbouring countries. Tribal cousins. Nations whose people cross the border every day, with families, friendships and cultures deeply intertwined. There was, theoretically, a scoreline that would have suited them both. I’m not suggesting for one second that teams should ever engineer a result. Football must always be played honestly. But it is remarkable that such a possibility even existed. Yet, watching the match, it didn’t seem as though anyone on either bench fully appreciated the qualification permutations. Malawi continued to chase an equaliser deep into stoppage time. Zambia continued to search for another goal, but without the obvious urgency that comes from knowing exactly what is required. Then, at the final whistle, there was visible confusion. The Malawi players didn’t immediately celebrate. It seemed to take several minutes, and confirmation of Nigeria’s victory over Egypt, before they realised they had qualified. That leaves me wondering whether the coaches, analysts, administrators and even the players were fully aware of the mathematics before kick-off. If they were, fair enough. Perhaps they simply chose to ignore the permutations and focus solely on winning. But if they weren’t, then serious questions need to be asked. At elite international level, understanding the competition regulations is as important as understanding your opponents. Tournament football is often decided not just by talent, but by knowing exactly what result you need and adapting your tactics accordingly. For Zambia especially, who ultimately missed out, this deserves some honest reflection. If there was any uncertainty about the qualification scenarios, lessons need to be learned before the next major tournament.
