That's because X men are marvels main team along with the Fantastic Four. They only had the rights to avengers which was like a B/C team at the time of making the movies. Also why they didn't main spiderman initially (because Sony had him)

Obviously, that’s why Marvel still had the rights to those characters, none of the movies studios wanted C-list characters like Iron Man because nobody liked them before the MCU. Movie studios we willing to make TWO Ghost Rider movies before Iron Man.
