@healingwithcal: Picking your skin, pulling your hair or biting the inside of your cheek without even realising you are doing it is not a gross habit or a lack of self control. These are called body focused repetitive behaviours and they are directly linked to anxiety and nervous system dysregulation. Your body is looking for a way to regulate and release the tension it is carrying. It found this outlet because it works in the short term. If this sounds familiar it is worth exploring what your nervous system is trying to tell you. Skin picking anxiety, dermatillomania, body focused repetitive behaviours, BFRB, hair pulling trichotillomania, anxiety symptoms, nervous system dysregulation, mental health awareness, OCD and anxiety, signs of anxiety, anxiety in adults, mental health education, stress response, anxiety support.

I skin picked for years and I've now really bad scarring from it I used all sorts to dig at my skin when I look back now it was quite out of control I also have a really bad scar on my cheek where I constantly picked a spot and nearly made a hole ! I had microneedling to help with the scars which has definitely improved

I picked my lips terribly right through childhood into adulthood. I haven’t done it for a long time now - I don’t need to - I am more regulated now I have dealt with past trauma.

I went through therapy for it, they say it’s part of the OCD family. Mines exacerbated by tiredness stress and anxiety. I do it and sometimes I bleed too but I can’t help it and don’t often realise I’m doing it.

My mom struggle with that and it's unfortunately to a point she's being a danger for herself (causing herself wounds and they often get infected) I tried giving her fidget toys to keep her hands busy but she refused them. Any advices on how I could help her?
