Like most of the planet, I find the familiar comfort of watching Friends re-runs takes me right back to the 90s and early 2000s… anyway this one episode in particular got me thinking about the psychology of food. When vegetarian Phoebe met Mike’s high‑society parents in Friends (Season 9, Episode 7), she was served veal, and desperate to make a good impression, she joked that she eats “any baby animals.” In the same episode, Joey thought an emu farm would be like planting seeds, until Monica told him that emus are birds raised for meat. His response was to laugh about eating ‘bird meat’. Scenes like these make us laugh because they highlight our cognitive dissonance around eating animals. Psychologists call this the “meat paradox”, the tension between caring for animals and eating them. People often resolve this tension by dissociating meat from its animal origins, by rationalising their choices or by denigrating those who choose something different. Social identity theory explains that our identity is partly shaped by group membership; we feel pressure to conform to in‑group norms and fear judgment when we don’t. Studies have found that vegans report higher levels of discrimination and embitterment than vegetarians or omnivores. No wonder Phoebe tried to “blend in” over dinner! 🔸 Have you ever felt the need to hide your ethics to avoid being labelled “difficult”? 🔸 Do you relate to the comedic portrayal of vegetarians as quirky or annoying, or have you experienced real‑world stigma? Share your stories in the comments! I’d love to know how you navigate this in real life. References:
