Yes, I found their payment system to be kind of obtuse. Also, if it makes you feel any better, I saw about a dozen people have issues with those gates while I was there

If it makes you feel any better I messed up too on my first Shinkansen. I didn’t realize you needed to put both tickets in, but it didn’t yell at me and let me through. I only noticed something wasn’t right because my session from the other station I came from was still active. Ended up seeing a ticket agent and she manually closed out my session and gave me a replacement ticket since the one I put into the machine I didn’t know you have to retrieve 🙃

What mistake did you make? There are two different ticket options for the same train? Base fare and Express? I don’t understand 🤔 I don’t want to make a mistake when I get mine haha

that's not an express ticket, there's the ticket and the fare, you need both, express has nothing to do with it
