The title promises a boy falling to his death — but your eye goes straight to the ploughman turning the soil, the shepherd gazing up at the sky, the fisherman at the water’s edge, the grand ship in full sail. A beautiful, peaceful afternoon. Then look to the bottom right corner, beside the ship: two pale legs kicking, disappearing beneath the surface. That is Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and fell from the sky into the sea — the size of your thumb, shoved into the corner, and not one person in the painting is looking at him. Bruegel’s message is brutal: even your death is just another ordinary afternoon for everyone else. And there’s one detail almost nobody catches — a single partridge on the branch above the fisherman. In the myth, that bird was once a boy, the nephew Icarus’s father murdered out of jealousy. It came to watch him fall.
