Taiwanese designer Yi-Fei Chen created a unique student project called the Tear Gun, a device that turns her own tears into frozen ice bullets. While studying for her master’s at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Chen faced cultural challenges in the classroom. Growing up in Taiwan, she had been taught that questioning teachers was impolite, but her school encouraged students to debate with tutors. After a stressful presentation, she became overwhelmed with emotion and decided to transform her feelings into a creative project. The Tear Gun works in several steps: a mask with a silicone cup collects Chen’s tears, which flow into a small bottle inside the gun. Using high-pressure carbon dioxide, the tears freeze into ice bullets in about 20 seconds. A spring mechanism then launches the frozen bullets. Chen emphasized that the device is not meant to injure anyone but serves as a symbol of the difficulty of speaking up and turning strong emotions into something tangible. Chen even gave a live demonstration of the Tear Gun, shooting the same teacher who had inspired the project in front of about 20 students and faculty members. The teacher wore eye protection for safety, and the ice bullets were harmless. This demonstration highlighted the playful yet meaningful concept behind her invention, showing how personal emotion and creative design can come together in a memorable and expressive way. #DesignInnovation #WeirdInventions #StudentProject #ConceptualArt #CreativeDesign
