@shepherddogmama: She didn’t ask for food… she was telling me about the sound. 🥹 A few seconds before this, I turned on the microwave vent. Maple immediately pressed “food”… then “sound.” It clicked. She wasn’t asking to eat. She was telling me the sound coming from where we prepare food was bothering her. Maple has always been incredibly sensitive to certain noises. Lawn mowers. Leaf blowers. Strong wind. Fans. In the past, she’d come find me, lean against me, and tremble because she didn’t know what was happening. So I gave her a “sound” button. Every time she reacted to a scary noise, I’d press “sound” and help her identify it. “Wind sound.” “Outside sound.” “Fan sound.” Then I’d reassure her: “Sound okay.” If I could make the sound stop, I would. If I couldn’t, I’d explain it and help her move on. Now something incredible has happened. Instead of silently carrying that fear, she comes to me and tells me. Today she put “food” and “sound” together to describe the microwave. Whether you believe or not… I do know this: She no longer spends those moments shaking in my lap. She communicates.
