@imolelehmann: This company will clean your house for free. And the only thing they want in return is permission to film the cleaning so they can use the footage to train robots. It’s called Shift. A cleaner does your dishes, laundry, bathrooms and floors, then leaves without taking a cent. The reason Shift can afford this is because the cleaner wears a camera that records exactly how they complete every chore. And that’s important because household robots first need to learn how humans do these tasks. Random YouTube videos aren’t enough, so they need first-person examples from real homes that show every step, from gripping a sponge to folding a towel and navigating around clutter. Shift then blurs faces and sensitive details, turns the recordings into training data, and sells it to AI and robotics labs. And because that data is so valuable, the AI companies effectively pay for your cleaner. That’s also why the messier your home is, the more useful the footage becomes, because you’re giving the robots more situations to learn from. But cleaning is only the beginning. Shift says handymen, repairs, and errands are next. For now, the free cleaning is only available in New York City. And I think we’re going to start seeing this business model everywhere: you get free services in exchange for robot training data. Then once the robots are good enough, you probably won’t have to do your chores ever again If you want to stay up to date with the latest developments in AI and robotics, follow me for more.
