the reasons you can't argue with Christians is because they will always have a counter argument and it gets you absolutely nowhere they have to do it themselves

Oh you are so good with your words. I fucking wish I could be that well spoken and constructive when debate someone. Cuz usually it’s a bloodbath with occasional glimpses of sense

I think this is true if just about anything- not just religion. Like, when you said you can’t debate someone out of their identity, I could not agree more. But all kinds of belief systems construct identity. I’ve noticed this most prevalently with MAGA conservatives. Atheist tend to do this. Academics and scientists can and do fall prey to this- the older I get the more confident I become in believing the greatest sin of all might be certainty.

This would explain why, when I had what was essentially an “emotional” rupture with my old church (long story), my entire Christian belief system collapsed pretty much overnight – because, while I was never an “apologist”, I can see with hindsight just how much intellectual effort I had put into making my faith seem reasonable, because (as you say) I needed it to be. The moment I didn’t *need* my faith to be true, the intellectual edifice collapsed

Every Christian apologetic boils down to “the book doesn’t actually mean what it says.”

I left the Christian church w my son in 2006. He ended up marrying a pastor's daughter and I'm surrounded by it again. I've learned to just say, "I respect your perception of reality even though it's different than mine." It is really hard.

I wonder if you would attempt to do the same type of psychologizing to analytic philosophers of religion who have converted because of logical reasons. Would you attempt to argue that the only reason they converted was because of existential dread? If your approach is legitimate, then why couldn't the theist do the same thing and argue that the reason some atheists dont accept God is because they're too proud to submit to God. if this response is unsatisfactory then what stops your psychologizing from being successful, or are you question begging at this point? my point is that it helps nobody to overly psychologize beliefs without engaging in the actual arguements, and summing up every religious persons beliefs to existential dread is boring and defeatist, do better

Agreed as to arguing with apologists. I guess it’s a starting place for deconstruction. But they may never get there and it’s not my job to take them there. You speak truth with great accuracy. Thanks.

I receive a weekly apologetics text blog from a friend. He goes to great lengths to explain all the connections between the old and New Testament including lots of ALL CAPS. It’s exhausting trying to read. Feels like getting yelled at the whole time. Finally, I wrote him back one day and asked him why he feels the need to go to such lengths to prove his point. Said it felt performative, as if, he’s trying to sell you on how smart and intelligent he is. I asked why not just simplify all that into a single paragraph of what moral values he’s trying to achieve. He couldn’t answer. Point is, It’s exhausting trying to fumble through all the nonsense and big words. Why not just simplify all the extra-ness and say what you’re trying to say without all performative rhetoric.

My ex husband was a wanna be Catholic apologist. He used to like to debate this Jehovah’s Witness guy in our home. They would each have their Bibles in front of them At the kitchen table (and guess who served them?) and be arguing different chapters and verses, and I remember one day looking at them both thinking “you’re both crazy” and I just couldn’t stop thinking that after that. And that was the beginning of the crumbling of my faith. It was a good day.

As an outsider to the US, this also seems to apply to the MAGA identity. Rational argument just becomes irrelevant to Trump supporters.

When I was still a priest, struggling with doubts and thinking of leaving the ministry, a priest friend of mine took me to a conference by former evangelical-turned-catholic biblical scholar (?) Scott Hahn who showed all the "incredible ways" events of the New Testament were foreshadowed in the Old Testament, and the "beautiful complexity" of the faith. At the end of the conference, my friend asked: "surely that helped you with your faith, right?" to which I replied "oh, it's quite interesting, but every faith, every religion has its own complexity and faith system that makes perfect sense from within. It says nothing about the truth of these things. It just shows how good we are humans at drawing connections and cherry picking stuff that helps us in our belief." After I left the ministry, that very close and good Christian friend ghosted me. Losing friends that believe they had to cut ties with me to protect their faith was probably the hardest thing I had to go through in my deconversion process.

The complexity often makes it seem more believable, or may be intended to

I went through christian to atheist and it was such a relief but its kind of isolating too, like I still have so much knowledge of this book and how my faith operated and now that I see it isnt enough but people around me see me as a girl wanting to sin and going to hell

During my apologetics phase I really struggled with the role of the Holy Spirit. I would watch other people practicing apologetics and just doing a terrible job or just being completely wrong and I was like “does our witness rely on education or on the Spirit?” And I had a hard time resolving that.

Reading Caesar & Christ by Will & Ariel Durant made me an instant atheist. It was traumatic enough I can't remember the specific arguments but, decades later, here I am.

I might have had an apologetics phase if it hasn't been so infuriatingly easy to figure out that the Mormon church is a scam.

In my opinion, apologetics is deductive reasoning in reverse. Apologists start off with a conclusion, then gravitates to anything that helps them rationalize their conclusion. It's faulty logic.

The arguments of the faithful and apologists have always devolved into that one base point to me: I guess I just am not the target audience for these stories. The stories must fulfill some need a lot of people have that I just don’t share. And then I look at the authentic people behind the apologia and see their weaknesses, fears, vulnerabilities… and try not to begrudge them the strategies and tactics they use to build up confidence, reinforce their egos and confirm their identities. I wouldn’t admit one of these needy people into my inner circle of friends, but I recognize that there are a lot of people out there that need external validation due to some inner void that I’ll never know or experience firsthand.

Yeah, the myths in any religions textual transmission must be admitted not apologized for. ( I have some favorites) Also the myths our children & grandchildren listen to on social media, which is the greatest danger.
