. . #diabetestipo2 #prediabetes #Diabetes

A reminder that these little space heaters can become dangerous in seconds. I’ve stayed on my daughter for years about not leaving her bathroom heater plugged in unless she’s actually using it. Like most teenagers, she thought I was just being overprotective. Last night, around 1:00 a.m., she learned why. She had just gotten out of the shower and plugged the heater in. It had only been running for about five minutes when she heard crackling, then popping and sparking coming from the outlet. The next thing I knew, she was running into my room—still wrapped in nothing but panic—screaming, crying, and yelling for me. I didn’t even fully process what she was saying at first. I had no idea if someone had broken into the house or what I was about to walk into. When I stepped into the hallway, there was smoke throughout the house. I ran into the bathroom and found flames coming from the electrical outlet behind the heater. The bathroom was filled with a mixture of smoke, ash, and moisture from the shower. Thankfully, the flames never spread beyond the outlet. Kiersten and I immediately shut off the breaker. Then came the part every homeowner dreads—we pulled the outlet cover to make sure the fire hadn’t spread into the wall and even climbed into the attic looking for any signs that it had traveled. Thankfully, we found nothing. What scares me just as much is this… Not a single smoke detector went off. We have smoke alarms throughout the house. I replace the batteries whenever they chirp and at least once a year as preventative maintenance. Yet none of them sounded. I immediately replaced the hallway battery anyway because I wasn’t about to risk falling asleep if something reignited. It took me a long time to calm down enough to go back to sleep. Looking back, I’m incredibly thankful this happened while someone was awake and paying attention. Had this happened while we were asleep—or if she had left the room—it could have been a completely different story. Please be careful with space heaters. * Only plug them directly into a wall outlet—never an extension cord or power strip. * Keep them away from water and moisture. * Unplug them when they’re not in use. * Never leave them running unattended. * And don’t ignore unusual sounds like crackling or popping. Last night could have ended very differently. I’m thankful it didn’t. Please hug your babies a little tighter tonight. #smokealarms #fire #electricalfire #hugyourbabies
