Personally wish Id dnfd when we cease to understand the world and don't care for franzen but ymmv. loved lonesome dove, name of the rose, housekeeping, say nothing, minor detail, rachel incident, pachinko, the ben lerner, the ken follett, fanon, davis, baldwin, and the steinbeck! I have the same probs w my tbr 😂

If We Were Villains was just meh to me. I read it chasing the high that the Secret History gave me and it was nowhere close. I also didn’t like 11/22/63, it was my first Stephen king and I thought it was extremely corny. East of Eden was a 5 star read for me.

China Miéville deserves it. The Eyre Affair is a fun read. That’s not the best from Octavia Butler who the heck set up this list? Hyperion is definitely one of the core sci-fis, Pillars of the Earth as historical fiction yes, but then drop in Asian Saga too… really there are a lot of books on it that are just performative not really good or enjoyable at all.

I think you should try Of Human Bondage, the Screwtape Letters, Slaughterhouse Five (is there anyone better than Vonnegut???) and the Secret Garden. Catch-22 you may like but I hated it. I say pass on it

Trees is fantastic and such a somber but darkly funny look at a serious topic. Also a super quick read, the pacing and wit make it fly by!

Man's Search for Meaning is rly good and interesting, can be a little heavy and hard to stomach so be prepared, sadly I couldn't finish it bc i wasn't in the right place. If on a winter's night a traveler is AMAZING it's so funny, it keeps you hooked, and Italo Calvino is just a great writer so i definitely recommend that one. Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 is good too, it's a very interesting insight into korean culture and how women have been treated, it has many numbers and statistics and stuff like that so it reads a little bit more like an essay from time to time than a novel, so just keep that in mind before picking it up but i think it's worth it

I read The Wall not too long ago; it was a great dystopian novel that managed to convey the monotonous grind of survival very well!

I read White Teeth almost 15 years ago and I still think of the characters. One of the best examples of multigenerational narratives I've ever read.

The Wager, Slaughterhouse Five, Say Nothing, A Short Stay in Hell, Lonesome Dove, 11/22:63, Dawn of Everything, When We Cease to Understand the World ARE worth it. In Memoriam (probably the worst book on this list), Caste, Middlesex, and Pachinko are NOT worth it. The World According to Garp and Yellow Wife are meh. The Overstory, Metamorphosis, The Known World and Human Acts were good but I don’t remember much of them. Lincoln in the Bardo, East of Eden, The Picture of Dorian Gray were not for me but most people get something out of them.

i really don't think you'll be missing much if you skip if we were villains or she who became the sun honestly 😭 i hated stoner but that's absolutely an unpopular opinion and most people love it so i think it's worth the read... catch-22 can be very very tedious at times i recommend reading a few pages to see if you can fully commit to it idk..
