ADHD Perfectionism Is Not Really About Perfection For a long time, I thought perfectionism meant caring too much about getting everything exactly right. But for me, it often comes from knowing how quickly one small mistake can change the way people see me. I can do ten things well, forget one detail, and suddenly the conversation is about whether I am careless, unreliable, or not trying hard enough. So I prepare for questions nobody has asked yet. I research things far beyond what the task requires. I check the same work repeatedly. I keep adding, correcting, and reconsidering until finishing feels more frightening than continuing. It is not always a desire to impress anyone. Sometimes it is an attempt to protect everything I did well from being erased by the one thing I missed. That is what makes ADHD perfectionism so exhausting. The standard is not simply doing a good job.
