@askpaindoc: The way we talk about pain matters. One of the biggest frustrations I hear from chronic pain patients is, “I don’t think my doctors understand how bad it really is.” Part of that problem is the traditional 0 to 10 pain scale. Two people can both say they’re at an 8, yet be experiencing completely different realities. The Mankoski Pain Scale takes a different approach. Instead of focusing only on a number, it describes what that pain actually feels like and, more importantly, what it prevents you from doing. Can you work? Can you hold a conversation? Can you concentrate? Can you sleep? Can you function? That’s especially important in chronic pain. Over time, people adapt. They learn to hide their pain, smile through appointments, and continue taking care of their families despite hurting every day. Looking calm doesn’t mean the pain is mild. It often means they’ve become experts at living with it. No pain scale is perfect, but if you’ve ever struggled to explain your pain, this one may help your healthcare team better understand what you’re experiencing. Have you ever used the Mankoski Pain Scale before? I’d love to hear whether you found it more accurate than the traditional 0 to 10. Maybe instead of changing the scale, get doctors to actually listen and treat the cause

Ha so I was in so much pain I was literally passing out and the ER DOCTOR did not believe me. I was hemorrhaging in my abdomen. After surgery I was told I had a deadly pain tolerance. That’s what happens when you are not allowed to show pain when you’re chronic pain patient. This is bs

When my pain is highest, I curl in a ball and don’t speak or move. I get quieter the worse it gets

I have back and hip issues and fibromyalgia. I’m an eight pretty much all day every day. I’m not living. I’m just trying to survive.

this pain scale is a great way to get a number. before this it felt like a subjective number and me and my doc may see 6 differently.

This is great except the ER doesn’t care and considers you “pain seeking”

huh. I definitely end up in situations a few times a year where I can't move without crying out and I wouldn't have put it at a 10... maybe I'm not as tough as I thought I was? lol

I'm in pain 24/7, my base line is an average 5, and most people couldn't handle ONE DAY in my life 🤔 When I'm at a 8, 9 or 10, I still have to do everything life demands. I have to ACTIVELY convince myself to keep living, daily. because I am literally SUFFERING with pain.

I’ll stay at home at an 8, but I time it. If I can’t get it back down to a 4-6 myself using any at home/natural/meditation/baths/heating pads/ice type remedies within 2 hours, then I go to a hospital because it’s beyond what I can control.

It made me realise that I’ve only been considering something ‘pain’ when it hits a 6. Anything under that I thought was just discomfort. 💀

The problem with pain scales is that men typically rate their pain based on what they’ve experienced, whereas women tend to rate it based on what they think could be worse.

Getting my pain recognized is almost impossible. Because when I'm an 8 - I become overly eloquent & loquacious. It's an act to keep control. A 10 I can't talkdisassociate. No moaning ir crying. Everyone thinks my silence means I'm OK. But I'm just completely disassociated.

I get told that I can't have pain of level 8 if I can still smile. 🙄 I can mask pain to level 8 most of the day, only occasionally my mask might slip when I have a spike going to 9 or 10.

old GP was shocked that I lived with a broken wrist for 3 months, I thought it was just a bad sprain. since my regular daily pain was always around a 5 to 7 and the break was just annoying (around a 3).

Chronic migraines….no one understands the real pain scale of working with a migraine because you cannot continue to miss work because you risk being fired.

I live with pain every day. In 2019 my leg broke in 3 ways. I spoke calmly to the Drs and nurses because I was used to it. “What’s your pain right now”? “I’m past 10”. They treated me like a drug seeker. I went into shock and almost died.
