@theslowai: I ran the opening of Moby Dick through Research Prospect’s AI detector. Herman Melville published it in 1851. The detector came back with 7% AI-generated and another 37% flagged as human-written but AI-refined, so 44% of the text was marked as involving AI in some way. The first sentence it highlighted as AI-generated was “Call me Ishmael.” The first commercially successful typewriter did not go on sale until 1874, twenty-three years after the book was published. This is number one in a series, and I have plenty more. Source: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2701/2701-h/2701-h.htm #AIdetection #AcademicIntegrity #HigherEducation #EdTech #CriticalAI

I feel like the AI detectors should be sued atp. I feel it’s extremely unfair and causing a lot of stress.

that just proves it.... all authors who lived 100 years ago were time travellers 👀

The problem is, the big AI models are trained on material like this (the current Anthropic scandal/Project Panama) and they write modelling what they are trained on. 10 years double dash wouldnt have been a problem but now it is sign of AI use.

Using AI to detect AI is just... oxymoronic.

That’s I don’t even care about AI detectors. This just further proves my point.

Sadly enough, people are quick and ignorant when they find something new that they can use as an excuse to hate.

Same as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. She had been getting away with using AI for what... 200yrs?

This is how these ‘AI detectors’ are making money. Flagging AI in human content and asking you to sign up/pay to fix it. Suspect also data mining your data and content to boot!

I tried two ai detectors today and one said my piece was 64% ai written, the other said 100% human. Hilarious. But I can see real problems if people start using them as some kind of witch hunt.

There is still the possibility that timetravel works. Now it is both Mary Shelley and Herman Melville.

They do work, you just don't understand the results. Not 7% was written by AI, but there is a 7% chance that it was written by AI. It shows real AI texts with high probability.

What I like about this is that it shows that AI detectors do not work. My son’s uni accused him of using AI for an assessment which he didn’t. He is autistic and the detector simply picked up on his neurodivergent style
