Correction: Rayon is not plastic. It is a semi-synthetic fiber that is made out of wood pulp and heavily chemically processed to create a textile that, without the help of toxic substances, is quite weak on its own. This is a generalized statement based on most types of rayon, but doesn’t apply to all. The more chemicals it contains, the longer it will take to break down, so calling this material “biodegradable” may be misleading depending on what it has been treated with. Bottom line: it still causes pollution by microfiber release when washed which is problematic if certain chemicals were used in the production process. Despite these facts, the classification I made is technically wrong - I put a lot of time and energy into making sure I am talking about things that are accurate and well researched so I really apologize for the oversight.
