An 18 month old, especially one that has not been exposed to a phone before is not going to just pick it up and throw it in the pool in a matter of 30 seconds. I would be more worried that the Sister was not paying attention to the child or her belongings at the capacity that someone watching that young of a child around a pool should have been.

I was all for the OP paying half of the damage to the phone. But then when I heard the sister broke something of hers and tried to blame somebody else. I immediately changed my mind. This sister had no intention of apologizing or paying for the damage she did so why should OP pay her for half the phone. I called it a wash. But I’m petty like that.

If I was watching someone’s puppy, I would not leave my shoes out since puppies stereotypically chew on everything. And if I did leave them out and they were ruined, I would call myself a dingus and be more careful next time 🤷♀️

Isn’t baby sitter responsible for the child so wouldn’t she be responsible for damages as well if parent was there and the child did that then yes parent should pay but baby sitter took on responsibility of child by baby sitting

So some important points: - ops parents were watching the baby, the sister took it upon herself to take the child to the pool - op said they were in the pool, so sister must have had the phone in the pool or near the pool the child to get it - op said (in comments not read here) her son liked phones but never threw them just trying to parse it out for anyone else needing the facts like a whodunit Also, NTA, though not a fan of the jab about the other thing being returned broken as justification of not wanting to pay.

I have older kids that like their electronics but my bestie has a toddler. They know to either watch their devices or keep away from the baby because their electronics are their responsibility.

NTA. It was the sister's idea to take the baby swimming. I will say the whole babysitter thing I don't know many that would take an 18 month baby near a pool to begin with so that's not really an argument in my opinion.
