At the end, the chosen person is symbolically dunked into the Adige River inside a cage. In many cases, the actual politician is not the one who goes in. Instead, a stunt double or actor takes the icy plunge for the splash and the show. This makes the moment dramatic, entertaining, and safe. La Tonca has deep historical roots too. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, it was once a real punishment in Trento for people accused of blasphemy. Today, it has been brought back as a lighthearted tradition that mixes history, satire, and public theater, turning old punishment into a funny modern civic event.
