I think the bigger problem is that Democrats keep confusing the candidate they want to win with the candidate most capable of winning. Harris was running against Trump and still couldn’t close the deal. 2024 should be studied as a turnout and coalition problem, not explained away by one issue like Gaza. Trump retained more of his previous voters and performed better with new and returning voters, while Democrats lost more of Biden’s coalition. The next nominee needs to energize Democratic voters without simultaneously becoming the perfect villain for Republican turnout. Then, if Democrats win, use the governing window to actually address voting access, campaign finance, lobbying, and institutional safeguards instead of assuming the next Trump can’t happen.
