Many women wonder, “How do I know when I’m fertile?” The good news is that your body often gives you natural clues when you’re approaching ovulation—the time when you’re most likely to become pregnant. , I always remind women that these signs can suggest fertility, but they do not guarantee that ovulation has occurred. Some women experience many of these signs, while others notice only one or two. 1. Clear, Slippery Cervical Mucus One of the most reliable signs of fertility is a change in your vaginal discharge. As ovulation approaches, your discharge becomes: • Clear • Stretchy • Slippery • Similar to raw egg white This type of mucus helps sperm survive longer and swim more easily toward the egg. 2. Mild Pain on One Side of the Lower Abdomen Some women experience a brief, mild pain or cramp on one side of the lower abdomen during ovulation. This is called ovulation pain (Mittelschmerz). It usually: • Lasts a few minutes to a few hours • May switch sides each month • Is generally mild 3. Increased Sexual Desire Many women naturally notice an increase in their sex drive around ovulation. This happens because estrogen levels rise, making you feel more interested in intimacy during your most fertile days. 4. A Slight Rise in Basal Body Temperature After ovulation, your resting body temperature increases slightly because of progesterone. If you track your temperature every morning before getting out of bed, you’ll notice: • A small increase (about 0.3–0.5°C) • The higher temperature usually stays until your next period This confirms that ovulation has likely already occurred. 5. Softer, Higher Cervix Around ovulation, the cervix changes. It becomes: • Softer • Higher in the vagina • More open These changes make it easier for sperm to enter the uterus. 6. Breast Tenderness Hormonal changes around ovulation can make your breasts feel: • Tender • Fuller • More sensitive than usual Not every woman experiences this, but it can be a normal sign. 7. Increased Sense of Smell or Feeling More Attractive Some women report: • A stronger sense of smell • Feeling more energetic • Feeling more confident or attractive These subtle changes are believed to be linked to hormonal fluctuations around ovulation. Important Things to Remember • Not every woman experiences all these signs. • Irregular periods, PCOS, thyroid disorders, stress, certain medications, or hormonal imbalances can affect ovulation. • The most accurate ways to identify ovulation include ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), basal body temperature tracking, and ultrasound monitoring when recommended by a healthcare professional. • If you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if you’re 35 or older) without success, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare provider for an evaluation. #Women’sHealth #Ovulation #FertilityAwareness #ReproductiveHealth
