My theory on this feeling is that when we are young and impressionable, we accept hard love, criticism, punishment, judgment, bad behaviour, decisions, choices, because we either feel like we are in submission and the only way to be liked/safe is to go along with it. My second reason is that sometimes, when someone is the only person showing us attention or making us feel desired, we become afraid that if we walk away, nobody else will ever want us. Even if their attention comes with criticism, judgment, control or bad behaviour, we can feel like having someone is better than having no one. We become attached to the fact that at least someone sees us, wants us or chooses us, and the fear of losing that can make us tolerate treatment we wouldn’t otherwise accept. Over time, this can become a learned belief that we have to accept whatever love or attention we’re given because we don’t believe something better will come along. This specific quote has always been a rhetorical question, there’s so many variations as to why without actually figuring it out
