I still hold the theory that the reason he survived while the other two didn't was BECAUSE he was sedated and unconscious before he was put in a coma

This is a FANTASTIC edit, but I wanted to point out in case some people here haven’t read the book that Grace was the lead scientist and Stratt’s second in command of the Petrova Taskforce long before she chose the coma plan (he helped her decide on it!) or Grace tested positive for the coma resistance gene (the only person on the entire Taskforce who tested positive). If anyone else had, they would have been considered backups to the crew (knowingly or not), but as Stratt said in the book, it was an absolute MIRACLE that her deputy—the person who knew astrophage, the ship, and the mission the best out of anyone in the entire world—tested positive. The only thing he didn’t have was any astronaut training, so in the book she made sure he had it.

the phrase "I made sure of it" has IMPLICATIONS and idk if Stratt is cruel enough to manufacture two people's deaths to make it happen, but I do think she definitely wanted Grace to be the primary science specialist

the reveal was written so well. it's been building in the background of Grace's earth flashbacks the whole time. how he had to test the IVME in the EVA suit, his unusually high level of clearance, Stratt running everything by him and always asking him for feedback, and finally the results of his blood test for the coma resistant gene, that was kept secret from him by Stratt and only unintentionally told by Dubois. it's actually so genius, there's an impending sense of doom hanging over his earth memories that finally reared its ugly head in Stratt having to force him onto the ship.

I love the headcanon that whoever was training Ilyukhina and Yao were also tertiary crew but never had to find out, like they were just as close to Stratt as Ryland was for that exact same reason

People are saying that if she had been upfront, Ryland would have said yes to the mission…but I sorta disagree. Thematically, Ryland is a character who starts out as a coward, as someone unwilling to give up his life. That’s what gives him the space to grow during his time on the Hail Mary. Hell, when presented with the idea that 1/4-1/2 of the world’s population would die before they got another chance at a launch, he still refused to go. If Stratt had told him he was a backup on the suicide mission, I doubt there would be anything she could tell him that would prevent him from simply leaving the project right then and there, especially after he was so hesitant to join the project in the first place

the way he truly never had any control over his life after strat brought him on the ship. if he had never begged strat to further help and study the astrophage, he would have most likely walked away from all of this. he's the epitome of "I became too important at work" lmaoa

Everything related to him being forced onto the mission in the book literally makes me squirm so bad, I feel like all of it was just 50x worse

Dr captain Ryland Grace is so important to me. i loved how in the book we see glimpses of stratt as the kind of person that would do this. when she basically kidnaps people to work for her, when she risks grace's life to be the first one to work on astrophage, when she blows up Antarctica. it makes the betrayal make so much sense, like we should've seen it coming.

Thank god people are actually realizing just how horrifying his situation was aside from the force thinking that after your complete professional rejection you finally got a second chance just to be manipulated and used and left with no clue of who you are afterwards alone holy shit that’s mortifying

in a kinda sick way this is partially why I can never get behind the idea that stratt didnt love grace. maybe not romantically, but dispite him being THE BEST POSSIBLE CANDIDATE the one who damn near invented half the stuff with astrophage she put his want to not go on the mission above all else until it was made clear she HAD to. She could have saved who knows how much time if this was the plan from the beginning, but it wasn't, this was plan c the plan where everything that can go wrong has and the only option was the person she moved deadlines back to honor the wishes of

This makes my heart hurt so bad. And the fact Stratt never wanted this either and was probably doing it for peace of mind...

the thing is that she should've been upfront about the fact that he was the 3rd back up plan bc sure I'm in ch.14 (I think) in the audiobook but literally he's always with her and with the trainees was it too much for her to be upfront? instead she has him locked up and spends 3 days breaking a close bond before drugging him to get amnesia and then he hates her once he remembers. if he had enough time of warning he would've been at peace and also had his fcking belongings in the ship unlike in the movie
