Electric Company & Sesame Street was the only outlet for young POCs when we were bombarded with family shows like the Partridge Family, Brady Bunch, etc who had no Asian, Pacific Islander, Latino or Black American characters.,

not many people think about it but i think PBS having people of color is important to white kids too, it shows them how kids who look different from them are just like them after all. my daughter (white) was born in a town that was mostly white but we were watching non-white kids on Sesame Street every day before we moved to an area that was mostly non-white and she didn’t bat an eye at the kids who looked different than her. she integrated immediately, no questions or anything. PBS is so important for kids of all races.

Yes!!! I learned English mainly due to PBS programming. As a child, it was comfort to see myself in the programming. 🥰

so sad , look at us now as a society, we've regressed , so many people tried their best to bring unity and it's failed in 2026 with Trump and ICE etc 😢

Sesame Street is such a generational show. I do hope it's move to digital has the same impact it did when I was a kid.

Sesame Street was also intentional with their music - exposing kids to jazz and Latin rhythms from well known musicians.

as weird a it sounds, I have said this recently, there was everyone on Sesame Street, ELECTRIC COMPANY, ZOOM., I think it helped me not seeing people as different than me. I wasn't seeing race, actually I think there were fewer white people on those shows (and others)combined. 61, grew up in small town, no people of color, my mom was also very open in caring about everyone.
