@soocanadian: Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. tariffs on aluminum have driven up prices in the United States, arguing the added costs are being borne by American businesses rather than foreign exporters. Speaking Thursday, Carney said the price of aluminum in the U.S. has increased by 58 per cent since the tariffs were imposed. “Since Americans put their tariffs in, the price of aluminum in the United States has gone up 58%. It’s gone up by more than the tariff,” Carney said. He acknowledged that global market conditions have played a role in the increase but argued that tariffs account for most of the higher prices. “Some of that’s international prices, but most of that is pass-through of the tariff,” he said. Carney said the higher costs are creating challenges for U.S. companies that rely on aluminum as an input. “So that’s not a good situation for American companies,” he said. His remarks come as Canada and the United States continue negotiations over trade, with aluminum and other tariff-related issues remaining key points of contention between the two countries.

The price of aluminum in the USA has increased by roughly 21% to 25% over the past year, sitting at approximately $3,216 to $3,276 per metric ton.

The price of aluminum has not gone up 58% here in America. It’s just slightly gone up 1.5% Rio Tinto will probably go out of business before all the investments that aren’t really going on happen

Sadly we can no longer rely on the USA market. Carney is on the right path. Diversifying our trade internationally. My take is we must also transform our raw products like Aluminum localy in Canada. Encourage local manufacturing of products that we normally buy from the USA and the US.

It's curious that some use Carney discussing anything as an opportunity to take a pot shot at him. Smacks of pathetic desperation.
