@forgottenworldhistory: The Empress of Austria sealed her private poems in a box and ordered that nobody open it for sixty years. When they finally did, one whole section was addressed to her Swedish masseur. Elisabeth of Austria was the most famous woman in Europe and the most obsessive. She measured her waist daily, starved herself, and kept gymnastic rings and wall bars in her dressing room. She was still training like an athlete at fifty. Arvid Kellgren was a Swedish gymnastics director from a small town called Alingsås. In 1888 the Empress had him brought aboard her yacht at Trieste. She was 50. He was 32. They sailed for western Greece that autumn, the Empress travelling under a false name while she scouted Corfu for the palace she would build there. He treated her on board. And she wrote. The cycle is titled in her own hand: Corfu, autumn 1888 — the Arvid Songs. One of them reads: “We looked deep into each other’s eyes. We laughed and joked no more.” Another: “So will my soul one day lament, when fate cruelly parts us.” That Christmas, Emperor Franz Joseph decorated the young Swede with the Order of the Iron Crown, for the successful treatment of his wife. There is a photograph of Kellgren wearing it. The last thing in the cycle isn’t a poem to him. It’s a story she invented — a southern fairy tale about a woman being abducted and carried away. She started it at Corfu on 3 November 1888 and never finished it. It is the last poem she ever entered in the diary. Ten years later an anarchist stabbed her on a quayside in Geneva with a sharpened file. The wound was so fine she didn’t realise what had happened. She stood up, walked onto the boat, and collapsed. Kellgren went back to London. He took a medical degree, married into money, and ran his own institute for thirty years. He died in London in 1944, aged 87 — six years before the box was opened.
