According to Egyptian belief, every person who died entered the Hall of Judgment, where Anubis placed the heart of the deceased on one side of the sacred scales and the Feather of Ma’at, the symbol of truth and justice, on the other. The heart was believed to contain every thought, lie, kindness, and sin committed during a person’s life. If the heart was lighter than, or balanced with, the feather, the soul was declared pure and allowed to continue into eternal life. But if the heart proved heavy with wrongdoing, it faced a terrifying fate. Waiting beside the scales was Ammit, the fearsome creature with the head of a crocodile, the body of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. She devoured the hearts of those judged unworthy, condemning them to complete annihilation rather than eternal life. The final judgment was recorded by Thoth, the ibis-headed god of wisdom and writing, while Osiris, ruler of the underworld, delivered the final verdict. This powerful ritual became one of the most famous scenes in all of Egyptian mythology. It reminded every Egyptian—from the poorest farmer to the mightiest pharaoh—that wealth, power, and status meant nothing after death.
