Man who fired gun at EFF protest gets a fine vs 5 years for Julius Malema Watch this video and READ the caption BEFORE commenting On 6 November 2020, Jaco Pretorius, was arrested for discharging a firearm during an EFF protest at the Brackenfell High School. Pretorius as can be seen in this video also engaged in an assault on EFF members. Even though Pretorius fired an airgun, such weapons are still regulated under the Firearms Control Act and cannot be fired in public or built up areas. None of the people who were charged with assaulting EFF members were handed a custodial sentence. Jaco Pretorius in 2024 pleaded guilty to illegally discharging a firearm and was fined. No custodial sentence was imposed. Today 16 April 2026 the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF, Julius Malema, was sentenced to 5 years direct imprisonment for illegal possession of a firearm while charges against the man who handed him the firearm, Adriaan Snyman, was acquitted of all charges. Malema has angered many in South Africa’s conservative white Afrikaner community by repeated singing an Apartheid struggle song “Kill the Boer”. The Afrikaner minority rights group Afriforum has repeatedly taken Malema to court over the singing of the struggle song, which they claim is hate speech. South Africa’s Equality Court has ruled the song is not hate speech but a historical liberation song. After watching this video South Africans have to ask themselves if are all truly equal before the law? Do our courts have a bias and if that bias is racially or politically motivated? Something to think about.
