I'm a social worker, so many folks in shelters are from other states, NY residents can't even get in, it's so messed up.

these shelters are 💩 and dangerous and dirty and no one helps you at all... you are supposed to have a social worker but you never meet them and you fall under the radar and may stay in the shelter for years... if this didn't happen to you great for you. they need to fix the shelter before making things hard.

It hasn't been consistent so they are trying to make it cross the board. Workers hook up their friends. They are trying to crack down on people taking advantage of the programs.

I’m confused about this requirement. If someone has been homeless for two years, how are they expected to provide a two-year housing history? There are people who do not have a permanent place to live, so they may not have records showing where they stayed during that time.

I seen a post from people out of state planning to move to nyc via the shelter system. A lot of people commented to say the did the same thing.

I think all unhoused families deserve shelter and housing in whatever way they can get it. Out of the city, out of the state, idc kids deserve a roof over their heads. We are a sanctuary city. These new rules will only fill the shelters even more, it won’t lead to less homeless people needing housing. They’re not addressing the problem at hand or the shortages of diligent workers to help move people out of the shelter to begin with or the unaffordable rent. There’s not that many waiting for years in the shelter just for fun. People give up hope waiting for a voucher everyday. I’ve seen more people move out into uncertainty than stay and get an apartment unfortunately. We can’t blame homeless people for using the shelters when so much money is going to bail out billionaires and commit genocide 😔

People would tell people from other states to come to nyc and use the shelter to get housing. They had to crack down on this eventually.

but people will still be in the shelter. they'll just keep being found ineligible during that time. they'll have to keep going back to PATH repeatedly but they will still stay at whatever shelter they were placed and continue to do intake over and over again. then guess what happens after that? they'll have a 2 year housing history in shelter and they will be found eligible. this is going to extend shelter stay. this isn't alleviating anything

Yeah my dad is in a DHS shelter in NYC everybody he’s with is from another state. This is really terrible because I have always had housing instability. This is scary.
