Thanks for all this sensible advice. Regarding “fluent,” I realized lately how that word has been misused to the point of meaningless. People who don’t speak a second language don’t really know what fluency is, so they use it as a kind of embellisher when they’re impressed by someone else’s speaking ability. My Japanese is maybe semi-fluent (maybe I’m hard on myself), but if a random English speaker hears me speak a little they’ll say “Oh you’re fluent in Japanese??” and I know they don’t actually know what fluency is.

I hate Duolingo, way too slow and full of ads. I got a short story book (with quizzes) in my newest language and it’s helping me so much.
