@merrykennedy647: Somewhere along the way you decided you were the problem. The difficult one. The kid who was too much, too sensitive, too loud. And now, as an adult, you keep paying it back in silence. Extra patience. Extra understanding. An apology that never quite lands. Read this slowly. A child is not responsible for being a child. Every hard thing you did at six or ten or fourteen was age appropriate. Testing limits. Big feelings. Needing more than was convenient. None of that was a character flaw. It was a child doing exactly what children do. The job of adapting was never on you. A parent is meant to learn the child in front of them, the real one, with all their edges. You were not required to become easier so they could cope. They were required to grow so you did not have to. Notice what you are actually apologizing for. Not cruelty. Not harm. You are apologizing for having needs at an age when needing was your whole job. That is not a debt. That is childhood working exactly the way it is meant to. You can love your parents and still hand this back. You can believe they did their best and still refuse a bill that was never yours to pay. ... Hand the apology back to the years it came from. That account was closed the day you grew up.
